Yacht-sized passenger boat runs aground in high surf off Hawaii beach

## White Knuckle Wednesday: That Time We Almost Capsized

The ocean can be a humbling place. You can meticulously plan, check forecasts, and prepare your vessel, but ultimately, you’re at the mercy of forces far greater than yourself. This past Wednesday, we experienced a stark reminder of that fact in a way that left us gripping the rails, wide-eyed, and thankful to be back on solid ground.

We were about 30 nautical miles offshore, enjoying what started as a promising day of sailing. The wind, initially a steady 15 knots, began to build unexpectedly. Within what felt like minutes, we were battling gusts exceeding 30. We reefed the sails down to their minimum, and thought we were prepared for the conditions, but the sea state was becoming increasingly chaotic.

Then came the rogue wave.

I can only describe it as a wall of water, towering above the bow. Before we could react, it crashed against the hull with an incredible force. The boat lurched violently to leeward. For a terrifying moment, I swear we were staring straight at the water, the mast pointing almost horizontally to the surface. The sensation of being so close to being completely overturned is one I won’t soon forget. Everything that wasn’t secured went flying across the cabin. The contents of our galley ended up liberally coating the interior of the hull.

Time seemed to slow to a crawl. We were bracing for the inevitable, expecting to find ourselves swimming in the cold Atlantic. But somehow, miraculously, the boat righted itself. Slowly, and with an agonizing groan, it returned to an upright position.

The immediate aftermath was a blur of adrenaline-fueled activity. We checked the rig for damage, assessed the flooding (thankfully minimal), and secured the debris that had been scattered everywhere. Most importantly, we took stock of each other. Everyone was shaken but unharmed.

While the fear lingered, a wave of relief washed over us. We had weathered the storm, literally and figuratively. The experience served as a potent reminder of the power of the ocean and the importance of respect for its unpredictable nature. It also highlighted the importance of proper boat maintenance and crew training, both areas we constantly strive to improve.

While we’ve encountered rough seas before, this was by far the closest we’ve come to a capsize. It’s a story we’ll be recounting for years to come, and a valuable lesson learned about the importance of vigilance and preparedness on the open water.
